Wizards guard Jerry Stackhouse will have right knee surgery next week, with the outcome determining when he will return to the lineup.

It appears very unlikely Stackhouse will be ready for the start of the regular season Oct. 29.

``In spite of the rehabilitation work that I've been doing, I continue to experience pain in my knee,'' Stackhouse said Thursday.

``I haven't been able to play up to the level I'm capable of playing, and I'm hoping that this procedure will ease my discomfort so that I can get back and be 100 percent and help the team in any way I can.'' Ticketmaster

Stackhouse, who hasn't played or practiced in a week, was diagnosed this week with a condition that has deteriorated the lining on the back of his kneecap. The knee has bothered him since the final weeks of last season.

``He's very, very frustrated,'' coach Eddie Jordan said. Ticketmaster

Stackhouse had an MRI exam Tuesday and consulted with two doctors before making the decision. He'll have surgery Tuesday in New York.

Stackhouse led the Wizards in scoring last season, averaging 21.5 points. He recently signed a contract extension that will pay him $33 million over the next four seasons.
